D.A.R.E. Night
Tinicum School's Grade 5 DARE Program enjoyed yummy treats at Richman's Ice Cream Stand in Prospect Park on Wednesday, May 8th.  Families and friends came out (in spite of a rainshower now and then)  to show their support for the important work Tinicum Township's Officer Jim does with the 5th grade students.  In addition to delicious ice cream, we want to thank Officer Jim for a dedicated 20 years in the DARE Program. A BIG Thank You to Steve at Richman's and Mrs. DiFillipo at Tinicum Home and School for the arrangements.

Spring Dodgeball
The Spring Dodgeball Tournament was recently held to benefit the Tinicum 8th Grade Graduation Committee. Eleven teams of students and faculty members competed and Team 4 eventually came out on top. Fun was had by all while raising money for a worthy cause!

Excellence in Teaching
The Delaware County Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes outstanding and dedicated teachers in Delaware County. Recipients demonstrate outstanding dedication and significant contributions to Delaware County students. The selection committee chose teachers from nominations submitted by the general public. This year, Tinicum's Mrs. Said received this well deserved award! Pictured with Mrs. Said is her student teacher, Ms. Emily Grabias, and her 3rd grade class. Congratulations Mrs. Said....well done!
Egg Drop Contest
The 2ND Annual Egg Drop Competition for Mr. Coffey's 6-8 Purple class was held on Friday May 3rd, 2013. There were five contestants this year competing for the coveted championship. Students had to protect three eggs, their protecting device must be able to sit within a standard size sheet of paper, and nothing adhesive may directly touch the eggs. In the event of two or more students successfully protecting all three eggs, the tie breaker would go to the student with the device that weighed the least. The height of the drop this year increased dramatically; last year it was only off the school roof, this year with the help of Messina Electric (Tinicum School Alum: Sam Messina) the class was able to drop from a height of 43 feet 2 inches from the company bucket truck. For the second straight year Joe Mozitis came out on top, successfully protecting all three eggs with a device that weighed in at 4lbs. The class is completing the project by finding the average speed and acceleration of the device during the drop.

McDonalds Night
Would you like fries with that? On Monday, April 22nd, Tinicum's staff went from standing in front of the classroom to behind the fast food counter at McDonald's on MacDade Boulevard. A percentage of the proceeds earned from the hours 4-8 will benefit Tinicum School. Students enjoyed ordering french fries, burgers, and ice cream from their favorite teachers.

Mr. Trevisan took the time to answer questions about the writing process and explained the role writing plays in his daily life. His overall message was clear: writing is important and can open up a world of opportunities!

Project NEED
Mr. Saroka was recently asked again to help PECO and Project NEED at the Philadelphia Science Festival on Saturday, April 20th. Over 20,000 people attended, and Mr. Saroka had the chance to teach hundreds of students and their parents about how batteries work (using fruit batteries), Ultraviolet Light (using UV beads) and how we can harness the power of the wind using wind turbine mini kits. The weather worked out for the 2nd year in a row and a lot of good fun and good science was enjoyed by all.
